OUR LEGACY
The Meyer Freifechter Guild (MFFG), an International martial arts group, operating as an educational, researched-based Not-for-Profit aspiring to recreate the combative art of the Sixteenth century using the written works of Joachim Meÿer in the manner of the German Fechtschule as base (TC 01-IL, 2011, 1-1).
The goal of the Living-Meÿer Historical Fencing School, since joining the MFFG in 2009, remains supporting the guild’s efforts to research and reproduce the considerable martial skills of Renaissance Europe, specifically Joachim Meÿer’s explanation found primarily within his 1570 publication with the further support of his unpublished writings (see Table 01).
In attempts to accomplish this Living-Meÿer has fielded and follows a tested and refined methodology designed to cultivate actionable martial skill by way of training, organized study, evaluations, and pressure testing utilizing the various weapon systems covered by Joachim Meÿer writings. The principles guiding all Living-Meÿer historical fencing schools are the same as all MFFG affiliated clubs or valid study groups adhering to standards, they are to: Build cohesive leadership and coaching teams through mutual trust and a mentorship program; Create and foster a culture of warrior scholars, by utilizing a shared understanding of historical context and fencing terminology set within Meÿer’s material Provide clear intentions, timelines and benchmark goals for student advancement; Exercise disciplined orderly training and expect peer review when introducing novel material; Accept prudent risk in order to accomplish training and research objectives. Living-Meÿer historical fencing schools have a defined doctrine of fundamental principles that gently guide personal study, research and reading. Our principles advance physical proficiency and skill in the war arts with education on the tactics, techniques, terms and the symbolism of the Kunst des Fechtens.
